Friday’s high schools: Derek McMahon strikes late as Smith Academy ties Gateway Regional

Derek McMahon scored the tying goal with about two minutes left as the Smith Academy boys soccer team pulled out a point against Gateway Regional with a 1-1 tie in Huntington Friday.

Denver Yost scored for the Gators (2-0-1) with an assist by Curtis Dowers in the first half.

With 2:08 remaining in the game, McMahon scored for the Falcons (1-0-2) with an assist from Keith Natale.

Gators goalie Mike Arel made five saves, while Falcons goalie Cam Woodward made eight saves.

Josh Baillargeon and Justin Edinger played well for Gators, while Austin Rogers and Ben Bruscoe played well for the Falcons.

Hopkins 4, Easthampton 0 — Paul Delamy had one goal and two assists, while Tyler Szymkowicz added two goals and one assist as the Golden Hawks (4-0, 3-0 Schmid) stayed perfect.

Tim Hanlon also scored a goal for Hopkins and was assisted by Brennan Mitrolka.

Ben Pitta made four saves for the shutout.

Brady Parker stopped 11 shots for the Eagles (0-4, 0-4).

Hampshire 2, Southwick 1 — Bryan Brasil (assist) scored in the 66th minute and Brendan Bzdel added a goal four minutes later as the Raiders (1-0-2) beat the Rams (1-1-1).

Ben Preston had two saves for the Raiders.

Granby 3, St. Mary’s 0 — Noah Parent scored twice and Malcm Muguku added one tally as the Rams (1-3-1) won their first game of the season.

D.J. Menard had one assist, while Brett Sullivan made two saves in the home shutout.

South Hadley 0, Monson 0 — Christian Zuchowski made 20 saves for the Tigers (2-2-1).

Renaissance 4, Holyoke Catholic 0 — Ryan Lukomski and John O’Hara played well, while Tom Heavren made four saves, but the Gaels (0-3-1) fell to the Phoenix.

Girls soccer

Easthampton 1, Athol 0 — Maddie Grabowski scored an unassisted goal in the 18th minute as the Eagles (2-0-2) remained unbeaten with the win at home.

Alyssa Fugiel had five saves in the shutout and the back line of Jen Szafir, Alli Dabek, Katelyn Nardi and Tierney George played well in front of her.

Field Hockey

Frontier 2, Mahar 1 — Jordyn Roberts scored both goals for the Red Hawks (4-0), Brenna Sicard had one assist and Gwen Thayer made two saves in the road win.

Longmeadow 10, South Hadley 0 — Sam Brault finished with 33 saves as the Tigers (2-2) fell to the Lancers.

Girls Volleyball

Greenfield 3, Easthampton 0 — Caelin Mottor had five kills, four aces and seven digs, while Amanda Lambert added four kills and two digs but the Eagles (1-4) fell 25-15, 25-22, 25-20 on the road.

Pioneer Christian 3, Smith Voke 0 — Tia Messeck and Shelby Cormier each played well but the Vikings (0-2) fell 25-12, 25-11, 25-14 to the Eagles.
