Smith Vocational to field varsity football, girls volleyball next year; football to team up with Smith Academy

Both football and girls volleyball have been approved for varsity play by the PVIAC and the MIAA.

The football program will be run as a cooperative venture with Smith Academy in Hatfield. The team will play in the Tri-County League. Meanwhile, the girls volleyball team will be independent for the first two years.

“These are very exciting times here at Smith,” Superintendent Jeffrey Peterson said in a prepared statement. “We are committed to the total education of our students and offering extracurricular activities is essential to fulfilling this goal.”

So far, according to Peterson, about 40 students have signed up not counting next year’s incoming freshmen.

Smith Vocational junior Dan McCarthy has played football at Northampton High School for the past three years because his school did not have its own team. He said in a prepared statement released by Smith Vocational that he is excited about the opportunity to mentor and lead the new team.

“I will miss my friends and coaches at NHS. They are like brothers to me,” McCarthy said in the statment. “However, I am looking forward to helping my teammates at Smith become better football players and students.”

The team is in the process of fundraising and training for next year.
