Thursday’s field hockey: Smith Academy hands Northampton first loss

The Smith Academy field hockey team handed Northampton its first loss of the season Thursday with a 1-0 win in Northampton.

Kelly Ryan scored from Danielle Duseau late in the first half for the Falcons (4-2-2).

Hamp (6-1-1) had a goal disallowed midway through the first half. The ruling was the ball went off a player’s foot and into the net.

Lauren Bradford of Smith and Mary Greco of Northampton each made six saves.

After six straight shutouts to start the season, the Blue Devils allowed their first goal in a 1-1 draw with Amherst on Tuesday before the loss Thursday.

Amherst Regional 1, East Longmeadow 1 — Shannon Hebert scored the game-tying goal in the first half as the Hurricanes (1-5-2, 0-4 South) played to a draw at East Longmeadow.

Hebert’s goal came right after East Longmeadow’s goal. Jessica Abdow was credited with an assist on Hebert’s score.

Molly Fleiner-Etheridge played solid on defense for the Hurricanes, and Nadia Squitiero made five saves in goal.
