Thursday’s high schools: Frontier field hockey shuts out Mohawk
In a rematch of last year’s Western Massachusetts Division 2 title game and a key early contest for the North Division, the Frontier Regional field hockey team defeated Mohawk Trail 2-0 in Buckland on Thursday.
Jordyn Roberts and Rose Moscaritolo each scored for the defending champion Red Hawks (2-0, 2-0 North), while McKayla Poissant and Brenna Sicard were credited with assists.
Gwen Thayer made one save for the shutout.
Smith Academy 11, Athol 0 — Danielle Duseau scored five goals and had two assists as the Falcons (2-0, 2-0 North) cruised on the road.
Kelly Ryan added two goals, while Lauren Grondin, Paxton Watson, Marissa Wickles and Jen Adamites each scored once.
Lauren Bradford and Kayla Miastowski combined to make one save in the shutout.
South Hadley 2, Palmer 0 — Junior Taylor Guertin scored her first two varsity goals to lift the Tigers (1-0) to a road victory in their season opener.
Ali Rondeau and Lexi Methot each assisted once. It was Methot’s first varsity point.
Sam Brault made 11 saves to notch the shutout.
Granby 8, Ware 0 — Tara Mikalchus set up sister Erin Mikalchus (four points) for three goals as the Rams (1-0) rolled to a season-opening win on the road.
Alicia Frappier scored twice for Granby, with Kiley Baran, Mackenzie Cloutier and Megan Bachand adding one apiece. Kate Desormier, Jenn Cadigan, Holly Wardwell and Meghan Sullivan each picked up an assist.
Brittany Hauschild made seven saves in 60 minutes, and Michaela Sansouci stopped three over the final 20 to complete the shutout.
Athol 3, Hopkins Academy 1 — Ally Jenks scord from 39 yards out, but the Golden Hawks (0-1) fell in their season opener at home.
Kate Sullivan made four saves in the loss.
Gateway Regional 0, Easthampton 0 — The Gators (0-0-1) outshot the Eagles (0-0-2) 10-1 but couldn’t beat Alyssa Fugiel, who made six stops in the scoreless draw in Huntington.
Gateway keeper Sarah Otterbeck stopped one shot in her debut.
Hampshire Regional 7, Commerce 0 — Erin Bishop, Anna Dziok, Elizabeth Hotham, Michelle Labrie, Chelsea Moussette, Sieanna Caron and Jessica Birchenough each scored once as the Raiders (1-0-1) rolled in Springfield.
Bishop’s goal was the senior defender’s first of her career.
Alexandra Roessing and Lauren Aldrich were credited with assists.
Frontier Regional 1, Holyoke Catholic 1 — Meghan Devine scored for the Red Hawks (0-0-1) and Danielle Easton tallied for the Gaels (0-0-1) in the draw in Chicopee.
Amanda Calvo was credited with an assist for Frontier.
Camilla Baronas had 11 saves for the Red Hawks, while Katie Klejna made 15 saves for the Gaels.
Athol 3, Easthampton 0 — Caelin Mottor contributed two kills and one ace and Kate Avard had three blocks in the Eagles’ (0-2) loss on the road.
Turners Falls 3, Smith Vocational 0 — The Vikings fell 25-14, 25-12, 25-9 in the first match ever for the program in Montague.
