Wednesday’s high school softball: Frontier Regional hands Turners Falls first loss

Courtney Newsome scored in the third inning and Krystel Enko made it stand as the Frontier Regional softball team handed Turners Falls its first loss of the season 1-0 on Wednesday in South Deerfield.

Enko scattered three hits, walked one and struck out nine — including the final batter with a runner on third in the top of the seventh — for the Red Hawks (7-3, 7-3 Franklin).

“Krystel pitched beautifully today. She pitched great and we made plays in the field,” coach Carrie Fydenkevez said. “We worked hard in practice to get to this.”

Newsome reached on a walk and stole second. Cassidy Stankowski then smacked a single to left and Newsome scored when the throw to third went wide.

Gwen Thayer added a single as the only other hit for Frontier.

Hopkins Academy 11, Smith Academy 9 — Allison Butterfield’s two-run double in the bottom of the fifth put the Golden Hawks (4-5) up for good in the home victory.

Butterfield finished with three hits, four RBIs and two runs scored for Hopkins. Allison LaClair (RBI double) and Nicole Morrison each had two hits and a run, while Jera Barrett (RBI), Karoline Moriarty and Kyra Michalak each added a hit with a run.

Brooke Pashek led the Falcons (5-5) with three hits, three runs and a pair of RBIs. Cassidy Snyder (two hits, two RBIs), Alanah McLear (two RBIs) and Moira Pitrat (two hits) all scored two runs apiece.

LaClair struck out five with no walks in a complete-game win, while Lauren Grondin fanned four in the loss.

Hampshire Regional 20, Mohawk Trail 2 (6) — Paige Sullivan (3-for-4) and Savannah Waters (1-for-5) each hit three-run home runs as the Raiders (9-0, 9-0 Franklin) qualified for the postseason with the win in Buckland.

Chelsea Moussette (RBI) and Lilly West each had three hits, while Danielle McGan added two.

Sara Abel earned the win in the circle. The sophomore allowed two hits and no walks while striking out four.

East Longmeadow 2, Northampton 1 — Mary Greco’s sacrifice fly in the second inning nearly stood up, but the Blue Devils (8-3, 0-1 Valley Wheel) gave up a pair in the last of the sixth.

Shannon O’Leary scored the run for Hamp, while Lily Glading-DiLorenzo (double), Maya Kerstetter, Emilie Baldwin and Kristin Gross each had a hit.

Belchertown 6, Chicopee 5 — Erica Boileau delivered a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of fifth to complete a five-run comeback as the Orioles (7-4, 1-0 Suburban) picked up the home win.

Trailing 5-0 after two innings, Samantha Manitsas held batters quiet throughout the rest of the game, striking out four and walking two en route to the complete-game win.

Erinne Dull (two hits) and Mackenzie Yelle each had a pair of RBIs.

Minnechaug 14, Amherst 2 — Cassie Long had two hits, a run and an RBI as the Hurricanes (2-8, 0-1 Valley) dropped one at home.

Sarah Grace Spurgin collected the only other hit and run.
