HADLEY — Town Clerk Jessica Spanknebel, who suffered complications from a brain aneurysm last week, is said to be responsive under care at a Connecticut hospital.
“Right now we are keeping her and her family in our thoughts and prayers,” Hadley Town Administrator David Nixon said.
Spanknebel, 40, has served as Hadley’s town clerk since 2007 and is the wife of Hadley Fire Capt. Michael Spanknebel. According to Assistant Town Clerk Janice Kangas, the Spanknebels have two young children.
A Facebook page called the “Jessica Krieger Spanknebel Recovery Page” was created Sunday providing updates on her condition. According to the page, she is responding to commands and stimulation and appears to be comfortable.
While family members were unavailable for comment, Kangas said Monday that Spanknebel is hospitalized in Connecticut, though she did not know specifically where.
According to information put out by the Mayo Clinic, a brain aneurysm is a bulge or ballooning in a blood vessel in the brain. Most brain aneurysms do not create health problems or cause symptoms and many aneurysms are often detected only during tests for other conditions. A ruptured aneurysm, however, causes bleeding into the brain and quickly becomes life-threatening, requiring prompt medical treatment.
With the special state primary election coming up Tuesday and the annual Town Meeting taking place May 2, town officials are moving quickly to make arrangements to cover Spanknebel’s absence, Nixon said.
For now, Kangas will taking over for Spanknebel and the clerk’s office will be open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. this week, according to Nixon.
“We will try to get those hours expanded for next week,” he said.
Those who wish to make a donation to help the Spanknebel family, a Jessica Spanknebel Recovery Fund has been set up at the Easthampton Savings Bank, P.O. Box 81, Hadley, MA 01035, according to the Facebook page.
