Wednesday’s high schools: Hampshire boys hold off Easthampton

Shane Andrews stole an inbound pass with 10.3 seconds left and went coast-to-coast for a key insurance basket as the Hampshire Regional boys basketball team downed Easthampton 59-56 on the road Wednesday night.

Andrews finished with eight points. Easthampton had the ball with 2.2 seconds remaining and, after a timeout, got Tom Palaschek (five points) an open look behind the arc at the buzzer, but it hit the back rim.

Adam Laroche led a balanced scoring attack for Hampshire (9-11) with 13 points, while Brendan Bzdel added 11. Mitch Ouimette and Conor Cronin scored nine points each.

Chris Starcun led all scorers with 25 points for Easthampton (9-12) in both teams’ final game.

Dakota Wheeler added 12 points.

The game marked the end of the careers of Raiders’ seniors Andrews and Laroche, and Eagles’ seniors Starcun and Jeremy Hughes.

Girls basketball

Belchertown 54, Mahar 29 — Marissa Kopacz had 23 points and nine rebounds on senior night as the Orioles (14-6) closed the regular season with a win over the shorthanded Orange (16-4).

Tea Spellacy added 12 points, while Jillian Cavanaugh chipped in with seven points and seven rebounds.

Mahar played without top scorer Jill Valley, who was sick.

Holyoke Catholic 25, Gateway Regional 22 — Kyra Robins had 10 points as the Gaels (9-11) closed the regular season with the win at Holyoke Community College.

Kaitlin Mastello had nine points for the Gators (14-4).

Both teams will play in the Division 3 tournament.

Chicopee Comp 42, Amherst 29 — Jamie Staples had nine points but the Hurricanes (3-16, 2-7 Suburban) fell on the road.

Hockey

Easthampton 6, Amherst 1 — Tim Pfau scored four goals, while Alex Zadworny and Mike Grise each had one goal and two assists as the Eagles (9-4-5, 5-3 Fay) cruised at home.

Rob Carmel added five assists and Matt Sarafin made 23 saves in the win.

Matt Gazaille scored from Marshall O’Leary, and Eddie Sablak made 23 saves for the Hurricanes (3-13-3, 0-5-1).
