HADLEY — Interim Hadley Superintendent Donna Moyer said Tuesday that she plans to name an interim principal at Hopkins Academy next week.
Moyer said a screening committee — comprising staff, a school committee member and one administrator — unanimously selected four veteran educators from a pool of 17 applicants. Interviews will take place by the end of this week, she said.
“I think people are feeling optimistic,” Moyer said.
At the same time, Moyer said, the district is moving ahead with plans to hire a full-time principal to replace Diana Bonneville, who will become the principal at South Hadley High School in January. She follows former Superintendent Nicholas Young, who left Hadley in June to run the South Hadley school department.
Five forums will be held next week to help determine the qualities the community wants in the next principal, Moyer said. A community meeting will be held Dec. 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Hopkins cafeteria. Other meetings will include students, staff, district administration and the school committee, she said.
“The idea is to try and find the knowledge, skills and personal characteristics to move the district forward,” Moyer said.
The district will begin accepting applications in January and hopes to name a full-time principal in March, she said.
Bonneville will officially end her five-year tenure at Hopkins Dec. 21, the last school day before the Christmas break, though she will return to Hadley for four half-days to complete staff evaluations after the first of the year.
South Hadley had hoped to have Bonneville on board by Dec. 1, but that deadline was not possible, Moyer said.
