Friday’s tournaments: Gateway Regional boys fall on penalty kicks

Gateway Regional and St. Joseph’s played a thriller of a first round Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament boys soccer game Friday.

In a back-and-fourth contest, the visiting Crusaders held on for a shootout victory over the Gators in Huntington. The game was tied 3-3 after regulation and two overtimes. St. Joe’s won 3-2 on penalty kicks.

“It was a great game,” Gators coach Tim Gamble said. “I was proud of the kids.”

Gateway led 2-0 before the Crusaders scored three unanswered to take command. Calvin Dowers netted the tying goal off an assist from Ryan Fisk in the 21st minute of the second half then the defenses took over.

“We were in the box and we couldn’t get a touch,” Gamble said of his team’s play during the overtime periods. “We put on a lot of pressure. Their goalie came up big. We hit him a couple times and it went off his body.”

St. Joe’s struck first during PKs. Justin Edinger answered for Gateway, then Jean Baillargeon tied it at 2-2. But the Gators missed their final three shots as the Crusaders pulled away.

Baillargeon scored from Jake Merritt and Curtis Dowers scored from Edinger to give Gateway an early 2-0 lead.

Arel finished with five saves.

It was the final game for seniors Zach Mackechnie, Baillargeon and Fisk.

Ninth-seeded St. Joe’s (11-7-0) will play at No. 1 Lenox (6-6-5) Monday at 6 p.m. No. 8 Gateway finished 9-5-4.
