B2B ID: Lauren Abend, Empowered Healing Sports Massage of Hadley

NAME: Lauren Abend

JOB TITLE, COMPANY: Empowered Healing Sports Massage of Hadley

WEBSITE: www.empoweredhealing.massagetherapy.com

AGE: 33

WHEN THE BUSINESS STARTED: Nine months ago.

WHAT YOU DO: I am a massage therapist, specializing in deep tissue sports massage for the athletic and active body. I focus on releasing areas of tension in the body, providing greater range of motion to the muscles and joints and helping in injury recovery and maintenance for better athletic performance. I work with clients ranging from competitive college athletes, triathletes, rock climbers, cross-fit athletes and weekend warriors.

EXPERIENCE: I have been involved in sports and athletics all my life. Being a very kinesthetic person, it felt natural to choose a career that was focused on my love of fitness and health.

THE MARKET: I focus on reaching out to personal trainers, college sports teams, rock climbers, cross-fit athletes and active people all over the Valley.

HOW YOU REACH OUT TO IT: I try to spend time every month personally visiting local places in the Valley that focus on personal fitness and athletics to let them know about me and the work I am passionate about. I also volunteer at local sporting events or gyms by setting up my massage chair and offering massage while handing out my marketing materials. I have reached out through phone calls to the local college athletic trainers so they can refer their athletes to me.

KEY TO SUCCESS: Never give up or slow down, and stay positive. I never think that I won’t succeed. I also believe that by challenging my own athletic boundaries and participating in an event that is new and difficult for me is a great way to generate knowledge about my clients and what their muscles may be seeking for optimal athletic performance and recovery.

MISSTEP YOU LEARNED FROM: Beginning a business takes commitment and focus, but some days it is more proactive to take the day off when there is no massage work to be done. I try to make sure that I get in the physical activity that I need to keep me restored, to eat well and to get a massage.

WHAT OTHERS COULD LEARN FROM YOU: To do the work that interests you the most; find a niche and focus on it.

WHO HELPED MENTOR YOU PROFESSIONALLY: My own massage therapist helped steer me in the direction of sports massage. She knows my personality and thought athletics would be a great focus.

TOP GOALS FOR THE YEAR AHEAD: I hope to increase my client base, to bring in more college athletes and dead lift 200 pounds.

ADVICE FOR OTHERS SEEKING BUSINESS SUCCESS: Always put your energy in a proactive direction.

PARTING THOUGHT: I love my work. My clients inspire me every day. When I feel tough, they humble me and do something completely awe inspiring; when I feel tired, they tell me about their winning event, and I feel energized; when they injure themselves trying to reach the finish and come to me for repair and then go out and try harder, I know that this is what life is about — always try harder, always work harder and always challenge yourself. Life is never boring and my work reminds me of that each day. I hope to continue to push, work and challenge myself to become a therapist that can continue to help athletes to keep on moving forward in the activities that inspire and motivate them.
