Tuesday’s high schools: Hopkins earns big win to keep postseason hopes alive

Kayla Jacque’s two goals boosted the Hopkins Academy girls soccer team’s postseason hopes with a 2-1 win over Frontier Regional in South Deerfield Tuesday.

Mary Cook assisted on both goals for the Golden Hawks (6-6-2), who need four points in their final four games to qualify for the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament.

The remaining schedule is a challenge, as Hopkins hosts Holyoke Catholic (6-6-2) today, then is at Gateway (7-3-1) on Friday, at Granby (12-0-1) on Oct. 23 and at Easthampton (7-2-1) on Oct. 25.

Amanda Olson made six saves in the victory.

Amanda Calvo scored from Megan Farrick for the Red Hawks (0-9-3), while Camilla Baronas made 12 saves in the loss.

Wahconah 0, Northampton 0 — Maya Kerstetter made two saves as the Blue Devils (9-1-2) earned the draw at home.

Lauren McGrath hit the cross bar and a few other opportunities by her teammates missed as Northampton couldn’t convert.

Chicopee Comp 3, Amherst Regional 1 — Jamie Staples had the lone goal for the Hurricanes (4-7-3, 1-5 Kurty-Fielding) in the road defeat.

Sophia Marciano picked up an assist for Amherst, which needs seven points in its final four games to make the postseason.

Sarah Grace Spurgin (four saves) and Becca Carkhuff (three) split time in net.

Boys soccer

Belchertown 8, Southwick 1 — Six different players scored as the Orioles (11-0-0, 6-0-0 Holley) cruised at home.

Nate Fournier had two goals, while Alex DeSantis (assist), Chris Riel (assist), Trevor Erb, Ryan Kearney and Cameron Messier each had one tally. It was the first of Kearney’s career at Belchertown, which also earned an own goal.

Sam Stroman had two assist, Bill Aldrich had one helper and Zach Parsons made two saves.

It was the sixth time this season the Orioles scored at least eight goals. They have outscored their opponents 72-2 on the season.

South Hadley 5, Chicopee Comp 0 — Nate Flachs posted his first hat trick of the season to go with an assist as the Tigers (8-3-3, 4-1-3 Holley) won at home.

Ryan Dickinson scored once and assisted on three goals, while Dante Bottaro had a goal.

Center backs Cam Dellatorre and Dimitri Kastrinakis played well in front of goalies Eric Maryea (two saves) and Nate Cardova (three saves), who combined for the team’s seventh shutout of the season.

Easthampton 1, Sabis 1 — Zack Lewis scored from Noah Boysen in the first half as the Eagles (1-10-2, 1-7-1 Schmid) picked up a home draw.

Brady Parker made 10 saves to help Easthampton earn a point.

Smith Vocational 1, Pathfinder 1 — Nick Adair tied it up about 15 minutes into the second half and the Vikings (0-10-2) earned the draw at home.

Bryce Girard assisted on the tally, and Josh Harriman made eight saves for Smith Voke.

Hopkins Academy 3, Pioneer 0 — Evan Delaney and Tyler Szymkowicz each had a goal and an assist as the Golden Hawks (12-1-1) won in Northfield.

Paul Delamy added a tally in the win, while Ben Pitta earned the shutout with three saves.

Northampton 1, Minnechaug 0 — Elliot Weiss converted a penalty kick in the first half and the Blue Devils (4-7-3) came away with a road victory.

Jonah Hahn was fouled in the box to earn the PK. Jack Haller had six saves in the shutout, while Jordan Maurer, Dan Esrick and Zack Goodwin-Boyd played well for Hamp.

Hampshire Regional 1, Central 0 — Nick Malo’s first varsity goal was enough for the Raiders (4-3-3, 2-3-2 Holley) in Springfield.

Ryan Luong assisted on the game winner, while Ben Preston had five saves for the team’s fourth shutout of the year.

Monson 1, Frontier Regional 0 — Shawn Mazur-Garcia made three saves for the Red Hawks (1-12-1, 1-7 Schmid) in the loss on the road.

Field hockey

Smith Academy 0, Mohawk 0 — Lauren Bradford made seven saves as the Falcons (7-3-4, 3-1-1 North) qualified for the postseason with the point in Buckland.

Cassie Kudlay stopped seven shots for Mohawk (6-4-2, 3-2-1).

Longmeadow 3, Amherst Regional 0 — The Hurricanes fell to 2-7-2 (0-6 South) with the loss on the road.
