Thefts from homes under construction reported in South Hadley, Granby

SOUTH HADLEY — Police are advising residents to report suspicious behavior or vehicles at construction sites after receiving reports of two thefts at houses under construction in which furniture and several household appliances were stolen, said Lt. Steve Parentela.

At 8:44 a.m. on Sept. 28, police received a report that a stove, microwave, dishwasher and furniture had been stolen from a house under construction on River Lodge Road. Police estimate the value of those items at more than $2,000, Parentela said.

At 5:30 a.m. Sept. 30, police received a report that building supplies including uninstalled flooring as well as construction tools had been stolen from a home under construction on Stonybrook Way after 3 p.m. the day before. Police estimate the value of these items at more than $5,000, Parentela said.

He advises residents to call the police if they see trucks parked at construction sites at unusual times, such as after business hours or on weekends.

“If the furniture is going from the house to the truck in new construction, something is probably wrong,” Parentela said.

A similar incident was reported at a house being built on Batchelor Street in Granby at 8:13 a.m. Sept. 23 in which a furnace valued at approximately $1,500 was stolen.

Granby Police Chief Alan Wishart said that theft has not been linked to the later ones in South Hadley.
