Monday’s high schools: Northampton girls soccer qualifies for postseason

The Northampton girls soccer team received an outstanding defensive performance Monday afternoon as the Blue Devils clinched a Western Massachusetts Division 1 tournament berth with a 1-0 road victory over Southwick.

Molly King put home a cross by Leah Tompkins for the game’s lone goal for Hamp (9-1-1, 5-0 Central).

Maya Kerstetter made three stops for the shutout. Northampton’s back line of Marissa Pellegrino, Winnie Brown, Sage Loomis, Susan Bell, Haley Subocz and Sophie Glading-DiLorenzo didn’t allow Southwick a solid scoring opportunity.

Granby 4, Athol 0 — Kiley Baran scored two goals, while Brooke Labrie and Rachel Mick (assist) each had one as the Rams (12-0-1) cruised on the road.

Tara Mikalchus, Noelle Menard and Julia Gress each had one assist, and Brittany Hauschild made one save in the shutout.

Easthampton 2, Smith Academy 1 — Abby Edgin scored from Gabby Downier with 12:53 remaining as the Eagles (7-2-1) knocked off the Falcons (12-2-0) in Easthampton.

Molly Cabana gave Easthampton a 1-0 lead with an assist from Claire Douglass with 31:30 left in the first half.

Hannah Rickert tied the game from Anna Gelotte less than six minutes later.

Alyssa Fugiel made six saves for the Eagles.

Brooke Pashek stopped 11 for Smith.

Hampshire Regional 2, Chicopee 1 — Sarah Kober scored the game-winning goal with 17 minutes to play in regulation as the Raiders (6-5-3, 2-3 Central) moved back over .500 with the home win.

Elizabeth Hotham assisted on Kober’s tally. Vanessa Groeber also had a goal on an assist from Kober.

Bri Weltlich made four saves in the victory, while Lauren Aldrich held Chicopee’s leading scorer Jordan Bates shotless for the entire game.

Monson 4, Frontier Regional 0 — Camilla Baronas made 24 saves in net as the Red Hawks (0-8-3, 0-5-1 Grieve) fell to the unbeaten Mustangs (10-0-2, 6-0).

Palmer 2, South Hadley 1 — The Panthers broke a 1-1 tie on a goal with seven minutes left as the Tigers fell at home.

Meghan Ginley had a goal on an assist from Tara Bainbridge for South Hadley (2-8-3, 1-5-1 Grieve), while Alexis Gawron made nine saves.

Boys soccer

Smith Academy 1, Holyoke Catholic 1 — Trevor Lewicki scored from Colin Messinger in the 19th minute of the first half to give the Gaels (6-4-4, 1-3-2 McGrath South) an early lead at Szot Park in Chicopee.

James Beals tied the game with an assist from Zach Liebenow for the Falcons (11-1-2, 4-1-1).

Tom Heavren made 11 saves for Holyoke Catholic, while his counterpart at Smith Academy, Cameron Woodward, made nine.

Belchertown 8, Easthampton 0 — Eight different players scored as the Orioles (10-0-0) rolled at home.

Alex DeSantis, Oliver Hopkins, Chris Noga, Sam Stroman and Wesley Martins each had a goal and one assist. Nate Fournier, Cameron Messier and Noah Lussier each had one goal, while Zach Parsons made one save in the shutout.

Tyler Sudnick made 11 saves for the Eagles (1-10-1.

Gateway Regional 1, Pioneer Regional 0 — Curtis Dowers scored from Ferdinand Baillargeon in the 26th minute and the Gators (7-3-3, 1-2-1 McGrath South) made it stand up in the victory in Northfield.

Mike Arel made six saves for the shutout, including a key stop on a direct kick late in regulation.

Justin Edinger and Ryan Fisk also played solid games for Gateway.

Turners Falls 2, Granby 0 — Brett Sullivan made eight saves for the Rams (5-4-5, 3-2 McGrath North) in the road loss.

Chicopee 2, Northampton 0 — Jack Haller made five saves in the home loss for the Blue Devils (3-7-3, 1-3-2 Churchill-Moriarty).

Jonah Hahn, Casey Intrator and Louie Jacob played well for Hamp.

Field hockey

Frontier Regional 5, Palmer 0 — Rose Moscaritolo scored three goals for the second time in as many games and Taryn Marquis added one goal and two assists as the Red Hawks (10-1-2) cruised at home.

Jordyn Roberts also scored, while Sydney Judge and Hannah Woodring each had one assist.

Gwen Thayer made no saves in the shutout.

South Hadley 5, Cathedral 3 — Merry Kocot had a goal and an assist to help lead the Tigers (4-7-2, 3-2 Central) to the victory in Springfield.

Allie Rondeau, Hayley Racicot and Emily Florence scored once apiece, while Jordan Roy picked up her first career varsity goal. Dominique Wilkins and Olivia Szydziak each had a pair of assists.

Sam Brault made 18 saves for the win in goal.

Girls volleyball

Frontier Regional 3, Pioneer Regional 0 — Cassidy Stankowski returned after a six-match absence and had 11 kills as the Red Hawks (13-1, 5-0 Northern) earned the easy home sweep, 25-4, 25-9, 25-8.

Tori Whitney had 16 assists and five aces for Frontier. Sarah Conlisk had five kills and three aces, while Kate Harper added seven kills.

Belchertown 3, Mohawk Regional 0 — The Orioles (7-7, 2-2 Southern) picked up the home sweep, 25-13, 25-15, 25-22

Brianna Melanson had four kills and one block in the win, while Kayla McGrath had five assists.


In the Belchertown football team’s 35-7 victory over Mahar Saturday, Jake Bradway caught three passes for 76 yards and a touchdown. Bradway was misidentified in Monday’s Gazette.
