Weekend planner: Memorial
Northampton’s Carl Russo was a social worker, a lawyer, a radio host and, not least of all, a poet and poetry lover who “wanted to help everyone find their poetic voice,” says Tom Clark, with whom Russo co-founded the Florence Poets Society a decade ago. Russo, who died last October at age 63 after an extended struggle with health issues, was known as much for his poetry and his encouragement of fledgling poets as for his work as a bar advocate, providing assistance to those with little or no money, including many veterans.
On Friday Russo’s friends are sponsoring “In Memory of Carl Russo: A Celebration of Life” at the Garden House at Look Park in Florence. Running from 7-11 p.m., the benefit will feature poetry readings, music by The Mike Hooker Experience and a cash bar. There is a minimum suggested donation at the door of $20.
