Justin Carey leads Amherst Regional boys basketball past Hoosac

Justin Carey scored a game-high 15 points as the Amherst Regional boys basketball team defeated Hoosac Valley 60-39 at home Saturday.

Will Cuffee (eight rebounds) and Noris Cuevas-Nova added seven points each in the win.

Nick Johnson finished with four points, six assists, four steals and four blocks for Amherst (5-3).

Girls basketball

Belchertown 53, Holyoke Catholic 19 — Téa Spellacy scored a game-high 14 ponts and Jillian Cavanaugh added 11 more as the Orioles (6-2) cruised at Holyoke Community College on Saturday.

Lindsey Robins led the Gaels (3-6) with seven points.

Hockey

South Hadley 8, Central 2 — Tom Dowd netted a hat trick and two assists as the Tigers (6-2) dominated Saturday in Holyoke.

Robert Kass (one goal, three assists) and Tom Crotty (four assists) were each credited with four points.

Brian Bak (assist), Ben Kravetz (assist), Jeff Beauregard and Nate Garon each added one goal.

Devin Hoagland and Steve Mathes combined for 28 saves in the win.

Greenfield 4, Amherst Regional 1 — Luke Allen scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes (2-6-2) at home Saturday.

Eddy Sablak made 49 saves in the loss.

Turners Falls 7, St. Mary 0 — Trevor Peduzzi (two goals, three assists) and Cody Booska (one, four) each recorded five points as the Indians (5-4-1) won Saturday in Greenfield.

Tim Atkins (two goals, one assist), Brandon Lenois (one, one) and Christian Sawicki also scored in the victory.

Brandon Bryant made 14 saves for the shutout.

Cathedral 3, BC High 2 — John Leonard of Amherst was credited with an assist on the game-winning goal with 4 minutes, 23 seconds remaining as the Panthers (8-0-1) handed the Eagles (6-1-2) their first loss of the season Saturday in West Springfield.

Wrestling

Hampshire 63, Gateway 18; Hampshire 52, Northampton 27; Hampshire 45, Monument 18 — The Raiders enjoyed a 3-0 day at the Belchertown duals Saturday.

Brendan Weir (120 pounds), Frankie Weir (182) and John Lachowicz (220) each went 3-0 with two pins.

Nick O’Hare (138), Jacob Gray (145), Matt Carrier (285) all finished the day 3-0 with one pin.

Gateway’s Joe Jones (106) and Andrew Goskowicz (160) earned pins in the loss to the Raiders.

Northampton’s Yann Konan (132), Kyle Cote Houghton (152), Mark Grabiec (170) and Ben O’Connor (195) were victorious in their matches in the loss to Hampshire.

Granby 45, Monument 30; Granby 42, Westfield 42; Granby 42, Ludlow 42 — Charlie Humphrey (160) had two pins for the Rams, who went 1-0-2 in Belchertown on Saturday.

Ben Rideout (152) went 3-0 with one pin.

Belchertown 42, Ludlow 36; South Hadley 42, Belchertown 30 — Troy Doming (120) went 2-0 with a pair of pins as the Orioles split two matches at the home duals Saturday.

Charlie Merrick (145) went 2-0 with one pin.

South Hadley’s Chris Rojas (132), Bobby O’Connell (138), Justin Pontz (170) and Riley Baker (220) each earned victories via pin in the Tigers’ win over the Orioles.

Girls basketball

Cushing 49, Williston 41 — Natalia Ovando scored 17 points, but the Wildcats (3-5) lost Saturday in Ashburnham.

Elizabeth Calderone of Whately added 10 points and eight rebounds in the loss.

Girls hockey

Williston 3, Gunnery 1 — Christina Zalewski scored twice to lead the Wildcats (6-4) to victory at home Saturday.

Alex Starczyk also scored in the win, while Delaney Belinskas was credited with two assists.
