Pioneer Valley group to build gingerbread houses as fundraiser

— It’s fitting that as a fundraiser for the Pioneer Valley Habitat for Humanity, people are being asked to build houses.

The materials used, though, are not typical building supplies.

Dubbed a “ Gingerbread Build Contest,” the event is set for Dec. 8 from 2-5:30 p.m. at the Eastworks Building, 116 Pleasant St., Easthampton.

Participants have formed teams that are raising money through pledges. The teams will decorate their gingerbread houses at the Eastworks event, then auction them off as an additional fundraiser that day. Teams are made up of children, families and business colleagues.

The Eastworks Building has donated the use of its community room for the event. The River Valley Market of Northampton has donated gingerbread pieces and frosting sufficient to make dozens of gingerbread houses. Other sponsors include Maple Street Architects, Integrity Development & Construction, Freedom Credit Union, Nicky D’s, Bova Harrington, Norseman AV, Puffer Printing and Dietz Architects.

The money raised will go toward building affordable homes for low-income families in the Pioneer Valley. The local Habitat group serves Hampshire and Franklin counties, building homes with volunteer labor and donations of material, supplies, land and services. The family becomes an active Habitat partner, contributing hours of sweat equity during the construction of their home.
