Northampton man in critical condition after being struck by vehicle on Route 10
NORTHAMPTON — A city man was in critical condition Sunday night after being struck by a vehicle on Easthampton Road (Route 10) in Northampton, according to police.
Police declined to release the names of the injured man or driver, and reported few details about the accident at 7 p.m. near Roland’s Motor Works. The accident shut down Route 10 in both directions near the Northampton and Easthampton city line for more than three hours.
Police said the driver, an Easthampton man, was traveling south when he struck the pedestrian. Both the driver and victim were at the scene when police arrived.
The man hit by the vehicle suffered serious injuries and was taken by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. The driver of the vehicle was interviewed by police and let go, Northampton Police Lt. Jody Kasper said Sunday night.
Police were still at the accident scene as of 10:30 p.m.
The accident is the second in the last five days in Northampton in which a pedestrian suffered serious injuries when he was struck by a vehicle. On Wednesday, a 35-year-old Hatfield man suffered a head injury after he was hit by a truck driven by a Chesterfield man while in a crosswalk on New South Street.
