Thursday’s high schools: Derek McMahon records hat trick as Smith Academy soccer qualifies for postseason

Derek McMahon continued to terrorize opposing defenses and the Smith Academy boys soccer team clinched a postseason berth with a 5-0 over Mahar in Orange Thursday.

McMahon scored a hat trick and had an assist for the Falcons (9-1-1) and the defense posted its seventh straight shutout in the victory.

McMahon has now scored eight goals in his last three games.

Quinn Rickert and Nat Hanson each scored once. Tyler Gay had two assists, while Mat Sulda had one.

Cameron Woodward made one save.

Hampshire Regional 1, Athol 0 — Jonah Vaclavicek netted his second straight game winner for the Raiders (3-3-3) in the victory at home.

Josh Fasoli earned the assist for Vaclavicek, who also lifted Hampshire in Tuesday’s 3-2 win over Hopkins Academy.

Ben Preston made four saves for the Raiders, who are 2-0-1 in their last three games.

Granby 2, Gateway Regional 1 — The Rams (4-3-2) took advantage of two own goals and came away with the home victory.

Early in the second half, Andrew Strycharz and DJ Menard pressured the Gateway defense to cause the second goal.

Curtis Dowers scored from Ben Van Heygen as the Gators (3-3-3) got on the board first.

Brett Sullivan made five saves for Granby, while Mike Arel stopped a pair from Gateway.

Belchertown 8, Sabis 0 — Trevor Erb, Nate Fournier and Wesley Martins scored two goals each as the Orioles (7-0, 5-0 Holley) went to Springfield and recorded another blowout victory.

Chris Riel accounted for one goal and four assists, and Bill Aldrich chipped in a goal.

Fournier, Noah Lussier and Ryan Kearney each had one assist.

Zach Parsons made one save for Belchertown.

South Hadley 5, Frontier Regional 0 — Ryan Dickinson’s five points lifted the Tigers (6-2-2) to the independent victory in South Deerfield.

Dickinson had a hat trick with a pair of assists in the win. Nate Flachs (two assists) and Liam Medina added a tally apiece in the win, while Mike Paleologopoulos picked up an assist.

Eric Maryea made three saves for the shutout, and Shawn Mazur-Garcia had a pair of stops for the Red Hawks (0-9-1).

Chicopee Comp 1, Easthampton 0 — Brady Parker made 10 saves but the Eagles (1-7-1) fell at home.

Girls soccer

Belchertown 1, Cathedral 1 — Natalie Caney scored from Jackie Soucia for the Orioles (7-0-2) at home in their second straight tie.

Sarah LaClair (two saves) and Ashley Cavanaugh (none) each played a half in net.

Ludlow 1, Amherst Regional 0 — Rebecca Carkhuff made eight saves as the Hurricanes (2-6-2) dropped the independent road matchup.

Field hockey

Northampton 2, Athol 1 — Emily Allcroft scored both goals for the Blue Devils (8-1-1) at home.

Adrienne Pascucci assisted on the first goal, which came in the opening minute, and Olivia Cotton assisted in the second goal 13 minutes later.

Mary Greco made no saves in the win.

Longmeadow 3, Frontier Regional 1 — Brenna Sicard scored for the defending western Mass. Division 2 champion Red Hawks (7-2), who fell to the defending D-1 champion Lancers in Longmeadow.

Gwen Thayer made 20 saves in the loss.

Mohawk Trail 2, South Hadley 1 — Cailey Newton’s first varsity goal was not enough as the Tigers (1-7-1, 1-2 Central) lost at home.

Newton scored in the second half to cut South Hadley’s deficit to one. However, the Tigers did not have time to find the equalizer. Emily Florence registered an assist on the goal.

Liz Menard made eight saves in the loss.

Girls Volleyball

Amherst Regional 3, Westfield 0 — Ali Ziomek turned in a complete performance with eight kills, four aces and four digs in the Hurricanes (7-5) win on the road.

Amherst claimed the match with game scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-20.

Athena Donta had six kills and 13 digs, while setters Grace Frank and Justine Bohl combined for 19 assists.
