Monday’s lacrosse: South Hadley pulls out nail-biter against East Longmeadow in final minute

With 85 seconds remaining, Maddie Brandts tied Monday’s game for the ninth time.

With 36 seconds left, Sienna Hebert untied for the final time as the South Hadley girls lacrosse team won a 16-15 nail-biter at East Longmeadow.

“It was a great game for the spectators, but not necessarily for me,” Tigers coach Mike Hyer said. “It was very stressful.”

Brooke Marion scored four goals and assisted on two, including Hebert’s winner.

Meg Ginley also scored four times, while Kelly Pouliot had three goals and two assists, including on Brandts game-tying goal for the Tigers (2-3, 1-3 Valley Wheel).

Claudia Menard, Olivia Slysz, Deanna Conti, Brandts (two assists) and Hebert each scored once. Kara Callahan was credited with three assists.

Beth Hennessey made seven saves in the win.

Monson 10, Holyoke Catholic 6 — Liz Cavanaugh scored twice as the Gaels’ (2-4, 2-1 Valley) fell on the road.

Elizabeth Klejna, Lexi Neffinger, Rita Hannoush and Jessica Cavanaugh (assist) each added a goal.

Katie Klejna made 17 saves, allowing only two goals after halftime.

Belchertown 10, Westfield 7 — Freshman Emma Jopson had three goals and an assist to help power the Orioles (6-3, 5-1 Valley) to the road victory.

After early back-and-forth action, Belchertown opened up the deciding three-goal lead at the end of the first half behind the attack from Jopson and two goals apiece from Kat Lowe, Natalie Caney (assist) and Kayla Panek (assist). Meg Foley added one goal.

Abbey Norden made 11 saves.

Boys lacrosse

Amherst Regional 16, Holyoke Catholic 1 — The Hurricanes (4-2) had 12 different players score goals and rolled to the victory at home.

Donovan Riley, James Sowers, Ben Thompson and Kevin Tran had two goals each in the victory, while Drew Kosloski (one goal, three assists), Melvin Espinoza-Rosa (one, two) and Charlie Clark (one, two) also had multiple points.

Isaac Bass, Luke Allen, Cody Baglow, Alex LaRaja and Justin Kim each scored once, while Isamu Bix and Kieran Presley were credited with one assist apiece.

Will Barstow and Janko Tomasic combined for three saves in net.

West Springfield 3, Belchertown 2 — Matt Parent scored both goals for the Orioles (3-5) in the close loss on the road.

Jordan Auffrey and Alex Wordsworth were credited with an assist each, while Travis Greeley made eight saves.

Drew Rossman scored the game winner with six minutes left in the fourth quarter for the Terriers (2-5).

Northampton 13, Monson 0 — The Blue Devils eliminated any suspense quickly taking a 11-0 lead after the first quarter and cruised at home.

Alex Zadworney (three assist) Ben Davis (two assists) and Cody Malone each scored three goals to lead Northampton (4-3).

Will Lombardi (two assists), Jake Ross (one assist), Nick Pellegrino and Jack Shaughnessy each scored a goal while Peter Higgins had an assists.

Tyler Walsh (four saves) and Bryce Wall (two) split time in goal for Hamp.
