Thursday’s skiing: Lucy Sloane paces Northampton effort

Lucy Sloane came in 10th place overall to lead the Northampton girls ski team to a first-place finish in the South Division at the PVIAC giant slalom race Thursday at Berkshire East.

Sloane finished in a time of 26.91 seconds to top all local girls. The Blue Devils finished more than 20 points better than second-place Holyoke Catholic, while Frontier Regional was third.

Three local boys earned top-10 finishes in Thursday’s slalom.

Austin Herman of Gateway was third in 35.18 as the Gators earned second place in the South.

Frontier’s Sean Doyle came in fourth at 35.22, while Charles Denhart of Northampton was seventh at 36.43.

In the first race of the season on Tuesday, Amherst’s Greg Lerner topped all local boys in the giant slalom at 26.09 seconds., good for sixth place. Denhart (seventh, 26.14) and Doyle (ninth, 26.33) also had top-10 showings.

On the girls side Tuesday, Northampton dominated the South Division again in winning the slalom. Madison Mientka (41.78) came in 10th to pace Hamp.
