Belchertown planners reject 135-foot cellphone tower

BELCHERTOWN — The Planning Board on Tuesday rejected a controversial bid by Verizon Wireless to erect a 135-foot cellphone tower on Aldrich Street in an area zoned for agricultural use but which has become a residential neighborhood in recent years. Though a majority of the Planning Board voted for the tower, the proposal fell short of the four-vote supermajority required for the special permit it needed to pass. Voting against the proposal were Chairman Christopher Laurenzo and member Daniel Beaudette.
