Weekend local baseball: Northampton earns comeback win in Mickey Mantle play

Northampton responded to a four-run deficit by scoring 14 times unanswered and won 14-4 at home Sunday in Mickey Mantle baseball action.

Charlie Ferrera earned the win on the mound and helped himself with two hits, including a double, and an RBI. Chris Soderberg (one RBI), Kyle Warren and Bryce Bolotin also had two hits.

Ben O’Connor had a three-run triple in the victory as Northampton improved to 2-0.

Frontier scored three times in the top of the first and added another run in the third.

Amherst 4, Easthampton 2; Amherst 14, South Hadley 4 — Daniel Hodgkins (three runs, two RBIs), Brett Morrison (three runs, two RBIs), Django Ellenhorn (two runs, one RBI), Zach Kelley (two runs, four RBIs), Ethan Young (one RBI) and Brendan Ziomek (one run, one RBI) each had two hits as Amherst (3-0-1) cruised against South Hadley on Sunday.

Ellenhorn, Jeffrey Shepard and Kelley combined on a three-hitter and struck out four.

In Saturday’s win over Easthampton, Morrison struck out seven over 52∕3 innings to earn the win, while Ellenhorn picked up the save. Young, Hodgkins and Alex Mangels had RBI hits each.

LJ Bara had an RBI double for Easthampton, while Dakota Wheeler was charged with the loss.

Athol 3, Easthampton 1 — Zach Crisafulli’s RBI single scored Brandon Bennet for the lone run for Easthampton (1-3) in the loss Sunday.

Kyle Richard went 2-for-3 for Easthampton.

Westfield 8, Belchertown 2; West Springfield 22, Belchertown 3 — Jon Mastalerz had three hits combined in a pair of losses over the weekend for Post 239 (0-3).

Westfield 11, Amherst 2 — Jamie Carey went 2-for3 with an RBI for Amherst (1-1) in its loss at home Sunday.

Pettengill Insurance 9, Easthampton 5 — Connor Sheridan had a bases-clearing triple in the eighth inning as South Hadley (3-1) won on the road Sunday.

Tri-County League

AshDee 7, Easthampton Savings Bank 4 — Billy Smith went 2-for-3 with a walk for Easthampton (2-1) in the loss Sunday.

Kyle Grumoli went 2-for-4 with a RBI for ESB.

Metro League

Easthampton 10-22, Northampton 0-5 — Caelin Mottor picked up a pair of wins in the circle — including a two-hit shutout in the opener — as Easthampton opened its season with a doubleheader sweep Sunday at home.

Mottor struck out 14 in 13 innings of work on the day.

In the first game, Kayla McFarland had three hits, three runs and one RBI, while Jaqi Gomez and Rachel Connell (two runs, one RBI) added two hits each.

In the second game, Kelly Avard went 4-for-4 with a home run, four runs scored and four RBIs. Mel Fasoli had three hits with a home run, three runs scored and four RBIs.

West Springfield 13-11, Amherst 5-2 — Sara Munier and Amanda Robins had two hits each as Amherst was swept in its season-opening doubleheader at home Sunday.

Megan Brennan added an RBI double.
