Weekend colleges: UMass baseball ends season with sweep of Temple

The University of Massachusetts baseball team closed its season with a three-game sweep of Temple, Saturday in Ambler, Pa.

UMass beat the Owls 11-9, following a doubleheader sweep Friday.

The Minutemen finished 14-31 overall, 7-17 in the Atlantic 10.

UMass, which took a 2-0 lead in the first inning Saturday, never trailed in the series.

Rob McLam finished 3-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs, while Nik Campero was 2-for-5 with three RBIs and one run scored.

Ryan Cusick (three runs), Kellen Pagel (RBI, run) and Vinny Scifo (run) each had two hits.

Rich Graef scored three times, while Dylan Begin and John Jennings each had one hit and one RBI.

Aaron Plunkett (1-6) earned the win, his first of the season. He struck out four, walked one and allowed four earned runs on eight hits over 61∕3 innings.

Jordan Pace worked two innings of five-hit relief following Dan Stoops, who relieved Pace. Pace earned both saves on Friday.

SUNY Cortland 3, Amherst 1 — The Lord Jeffs (27-13) saw their season come to an end Saturday with the loss in the NCAA Division III Auburn (N.Y.) Regional.

Nic Meyer went 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Jonathan Ramirez, Taiki Kasuga, Conner Gunn and Nolan Stewart (RBI) each had one hit.

Dylan Driscoll struck out two and allowed one earned run on eight hits over seven innings in the loss.

No. 3-ranked Cortland (38-10) scored twice in the first inning and held on.

Seton Hall 4, St. John’s 2 — Ryan Horstman (6-6) of South Hadley struck out six but allowed four runs in 5-plus innings as the Red Storm dropped their regular season finale Saturday.

St. John’s (23-33) is the sixth seed and opens the Big East tournament Wednesday.

Belchertown 15, Holyoke Catholic 4 — Austin Duhaime, Alex Wordsworth and Alex Bachand each scored three goals for the Orioles (7-11) on Friday.
