Valley Views: Local photographers aim their cameras outdoors
Quabbin Reservoir, Belchertown
Photograph and text by Anne E. Ely of South Hadley
Last spring, there was a nice patch of wild columbine right on the side of the road near the spillway at Quabbin. Combined with ferns and with the large rocks that line the roadway, they made a lovely scene. The hard part was getting down to their level without stretching out into the road and having to move quickly at the sound of a car coming — all while being ready to make the shot the second the breeze stopped. I had a 200 mm zoom lens on my digital camera, but since these were so close I only needed to extend it to about 68 mm focal length.
