Wednesday’s high schools: Northampton girls basketball team wins eighth straight
The Westfield girls basketball team kept sending Northampton to the free-throw line and the Blue Devils made them pay.
Hamp made 25 free throws to beat the Bombers 52-45 on the road Wednesday.
It was the eighth straight win for Northampton (11-2).
Anna Walther scored a game-high 20 points with five assists and five steals for Hamp. Walther made 14 of those free throws.
Maya Kerstetter posted a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds, while Anna Moore added 13 points.
Athol 62, Smith Academy 29 — Ashley Higgins scored a game-high 20 points, but the Falcons (2-11, 1-10 Franklin South) fell to the undefeated Red Raiders (13-0, 12-0 Franklin North) on the road.
Boys basketball
Minnechaug 72, Belchertown 69 — Tyler Verville scored 20, Zach Parsons had 19 points and Eric Adzima added 10 but the Orioles (4-7) fell at home.
Renaissance 68, Hampshire Regional 35 — Shane Andrews scored 13 points for the Raiders (5-4), who trailed by seven at halftime, but were then outscored 36-9 in the final 16 minutes.
Brendan Bzdel and Conor Cronin added seven points each in the loss.
Commerce 52, South Hadley 49 — Evan Marcus scored a game-high 19 points, but the Tigers (6-7) fell in Springfield.
T.J. Fitzell and Avon White added 10 points each in the loss.
Ice hockey
Easthampton 3, Chicopee Comp 3 — Rob Carmel had two goals and one assists, and Tim Pfau had a goal and two assists but the Eagles (4-2-4) settled for the tie with the Colts (1-8-2) at Lossone Rink in Easthampton.
Mike Grise and Alex Zadworny each had one assist for Easthampton.
Matt Sarafin made 33 saves for the Eagles.
St. Joseph’s 7, Belchertown 1 — The Crusaders jumped out to a 3-0 lead and beat the Orioles (1-8-2) at the Pittsfield Boys and Girls Club.
