Saturday’s high schools: South Hadley football all alone atop Suburban League

T.J. Fitzell scored four touchdowns and the South Hadley football team overwhelmed Amherst Regional 49-7 on Saturday night in South Hadley.

The Tigers (6-1, 3-0 Suburban) took over first place in the league with the victory as fellow undefeated squad Putnam (5-2, 2-1) suffered its first Suburban loss Friday night.

Fitzell finished with 116 yards rushing on nine carries and scored three times on the ground. He also had a 35-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Bryan Shippee (seven carries, 91 yards, one touchdown), quarterback Sean Rondeau (12 carries, 81 yards) and Riley Villeneuve (11 carries, 65 yards, one touchdown) all had strong performances on the ground for South Hadley.

Anthony Bullough led the defense with 11 tackles and an interception, which he returned 30 yards for a score.

Amherst (2-3, 1-2) suffered its second straight loss.

The Hurricanes lone score came on a first-quarter 5-yard connection from quarterback Justin Carey (101 yards passing, ) to Isaiah Davis-Toledo.

Easthampton 16, Franklin Tech 15 — Lucious Burrell rushed for 110 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries as Easthampton (5-2, 5-0 Tri-County) held on for the win on the road Saturday.

Shane Andrews added 82 yards on 12 carries.

Jake Earl had a 32-yard field goal attempt go wide to the right as time expired for Franklin Tech (2-5, 1-3).

Commerce 22, Frontier 0 — The Red Hawks (2-3, 1-3 Intercounty) struggled offensively and suffered their third straight loss and second straight shutout at home Saturday.

Girls Soccer

Northampton 2, Sabis 1 — Charlotte Maurer had a part of both goals for the Blue Devils (10-1-2) Saturday in Springfield.

Maurer scored once and assisted on a Sophie Glading-DiLorenzo tally, while Molly King was credited with an assist.

Maya Kerstetter made five saves for Northampton.

Boys Soccer

Gateway 1, Smith Academy 0 — Zach Mackechnie scored the lone goal in the second half as the Gators (8-3-4, 2-2-2 McGrath South) extended their unbeaten streak to six with the win at home Saturday.

Mike Arel made 11 saves for the Gators’ fifth straight shutout and 11th overall. Cameron Woodward had seven for the Falcons (11-2-2, 4-2-1).

The loss snapped an 11-game unbeaten streak for Smith.

Belchertown 2, Monument Mountain 1 — Noah Lussier scored the game-winner with 12 minutes remaining to keep the Orioles (13-0) perfect with the victory Saturday in Great Barrington.

Chris Riel also scored in the victory, while Alex DeSantis assisted on both goals.

Zach Parsons had five saves.

Hampshire Regional 3, Holyoke 1 — Colin Dearborn broke a 1-1 tie in the second half and Josh Fasoli netted an insurance goal for the Raiders (5-4-3, 3-4-2 Holley) Saturday in Holyoke.

Scott Labrie scored the game’s first goal.

Tanner Bzdel, Kevin Brasil and Matt Rigali were credited with assists in the win, while Ben Preston made five saves.

Cross Country

Amherst Regional finished fourth out of nine teams in the championship division at the Northeast Championship Invitational in East Greenwich, R.I., Saturday.

Mel Devoney led the way with in ninth overall at 18 minutes, 42 seconds on the 3.1-mile course.

Sara Vannah was the second finisher for the Hurricanes, placing 21st in 19:15, as the team finished second among teams from Massachusetts.

The boys, meanwhile, were sixth out of nine teams.

Ryan Stender (19th, 16:28) and Gabe Fishman (20th, 16:36) led the way as Amherst emerged as the second fastest team from Massachusetts.

Prep Schools

Williston 41, Wilbraham & Monson 26 — Jordan Keliinui led the way on both sides of the ball as as the Wildcats (3-2) won Saturday in Wilbraham.

Keliinui rushed for a team-high 103 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Defensively, he had 11 tackles and an interception.

Nick Kiossis (five carries, 59 yards) scored twice, while Ledell Robinson contributed a 90-yard kickoff return for a score.

Robinson also had an interception on defense.

Field Hockey

Williston 4, Pomfret 2 — Maddy Jerolman scored twice as the Wildcats (6-4) erased a 2-0 deficit to win Saturday in Pomfret, Conn.

Catie Laraway added one goal and one assist, while Taylor Senecal of South Hadley scored once.

Laura Aptowitz made five saves in the win.

Girls Soccer

Williston 1, Pomfret 1 — Gracie Simpson of South Hadley scored on an assist from Gia Parker of Amherst for the Wildcats (4-5-1) in Pomfret, Conn. Saturday.

Christina Zalewski had seven saves.

Boys Cross Country

Williston 19, Taft 36 — Evan Jacobson (16:58) of Florence, Corey Palumbo (17:20) and Andy Pierce (17:28) swept the top three spots for the Wildcats (7-1) in Watertown, Conn., Saturday.

Girls Cross Country

Taft 19, Williston 40 — Devon Greenwood of Easthampton (21:03) finished third overall as the Wildcats (4-3) fell in Watertown, Conn., Saturday.

Boys Water Polo

Williston 3, Hopkins School 7 — Ryan Cavanaugh of Florence scored eight goals as the Wildcats (4-7) dominated in New Haven, Conn., Saturday.

Dan Bridge of Worthington scored twice and had two assists.

Girls Volleyball

Worcester Academy 3, Williston 0 — The Wildcats fell 25-11, 25-11, 25-9 on the road Saturday.
