Bicyclist Olivia Pangburn killed in collision with truck in Amherst

AMHERST — A 22-year-old Newton woman was killed Sunday when her bicycle was involved in a collision with a truck near an entrance to Amherst College off Route 9.

Olivia Pangburn was bicycling east on Route 9, or College Street, when the collision occurred with a panel truck that was turning south into the college across from Dickinson Street, according to the Northwestern district attorney’s office.

The accident, which occurred a little after 4 p.m., took place the same day as Amherst College’s 192nd commencement. However, it is not clear whether Pangburn was affiliated with Amherst College.

Pangburn was taken by an Amherst Fire Department ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield, where she was pronounced dead, according to the district attorney’s office.

The driver of the truck was not injured and remained at the scene.

Amherst College police and Amherst police made the initial response to the accident. It remains under investigation by Amherst police, the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section (CARS) and the Massachusetts State Police Detectives Unit attached to the district attorney’s office.
