Environmental activist Bill McKibben to speak Friday at UMass

— Author and environmental activist Bill McKibben is scheduled to speak Friday at the University of Massachusetts Amherst about the fossil-fuel divestiture movement and the upcoming special election primary in Massachusetts.

McKibben, founder of the climate-change education and action organization 350.org, plans to speak in a 1:30 p.m. appearance scheduled by the UMass Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign. The talk, free and open to the public, will be on the Lincoln Campus Center’s 10th floor.

Among the topics of McKibben’s talk is the movement by universities, cities and religious institutions across the United States to divest from the fossil-fuel industry. According to organizers, five campuses have divested so far and Seattle is pursuing divestment of its $1.9 billion pension fund. Divestment campaigns have spread to 302 universities.

McKibben will also address comments made by Democratic Senate hopeful Rep. Stephen Lynch in favor of proceeding with the Keystone XL Pipeline project.

This will be the campaign’s second event this semester, following a teach-in and rally on April 5.
