Thursday’s colleges: Amherst softball sweeps Smith
Two days, four victories.
Less than 24 hours after sweeping Westfield State, the Amherst College softball team took a doubleheader from Smith College Thursday.
The Lord Jeffs won the first game 1-0 in eight innings and won the second 8-0 in five innings in Amherst.
Amherst’s Theresa Kelley struck out 13, walked three and scattered four hits over eight innings in Game 1.
Kaitlin Silkowitz and Caroline Miller each had two hits in the win.
Gina Martucci struck out five and allowed one run on eight hits in the loss.
Tori Brown had two hits for the Pioneers.
Arielle Doering fanned four and allowed two over four innings in Game 2 for the Jeffs. Caroline Sealander struck out one in one inning of work.
Donna Leet was 3-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs, while Sarah McKay had two hits and two RBIs. Kelsey Ayers and Idalia Friedson each had two hits in the win for Amherst (16-5).
Caroline Kushner and Brown each had a hit for Smith (4-12).
Smith College 13, Nichols 11 — Jessica Lillquist had six goals and Rachel Silveria (assist) added five as the Pioneers (3-7) cruised in Dudley.
Savannah Lawson made 17 saves in the win.
Mount Holyoke 8, Western Connecticut 7 — Julia Bell and Molly MacDonald each had three goals as the Lyons (7-2) won in Danbury, Conn.
