AMHERST — Firefighters quickly contained a fire Monday afternoon that damaged a third-floor apartment and displaced three residents at The Boulders.
The fire was reported about 1:15 p.m. in Building 160 at 188 East Hadley Road and was extinguished by 1:40 p.m. The cause of the fire remains under investigation and there were no injuries reported.
Assistant Fire Chief Donald R. McKay said emergency personnel were alerted by a call to 911 and the fire was contained to the room in which it started.
Firefighter Stephen Gaughan said the three people who lived in the unit were provided temporary housing at an area hotel by the property management company.
Police officers, who were first on the scene, went door to door on all three levels of the building to alert residents about the fire and get them out of the building. People living in other units on the third floor, where smoke had entered the hallway, were evacuated until inspectors determined they could return to their apartments.
Smoke was visible coming from the third-floor apartment and firefighters knocked out several windows as they worked to put out the blaze. The charred remains of two windows, as well as broken glass, could be seen on the ground along the back side of the building.
