Possible car break-in spree in South Amherst being investigated
AMHERST — Police are seeking the public’s help in locating a man who may have entered vehicles overnight in the Orchard Valley section of Amherst.
Detective David Foster said police were called Friday at 1:42 a.m. to Pondview Drive after a resident observed a man, described as wearing glasses and a dark hoodie, inside her truck.
The man fled while carrying a plastic grocery bag, but didn’t steal anything from the woman’s vehicle, Foster said. But items in this bag, which the man dropped while fleeing the area, may have been stolen from other vehicles, he said. Foster said the man may have been on Pondview Drive and Glendale Road and other nearby streets, including Greenwich Road, Tracy Circle and Farmington Road, going from vehicle to vehicle and entering ones that were unlocked.
State police and a K9 unit assisted with searching for the man until around 4:30 a.m., but were unable to locate him despite following footprints left in the snow that was falling. The search extended to the area of Hickory Ridge Golf Course on West Pomeroy Lane.
Foster said residents who may have seen suspicious activity can call the department’s anonymous tip line at 259-3344 or the detective bureau at 259-3015.
