UMass coach Derek Kellogg shakes up starting lineup

OLEAN, N.Y. — After two straight losses, University of Massachusetts coach Derek Kellogg shook up his starting lineup for the first time since Jesse Morgan was injured. He moved Cady Lalanne, who started the first six games of the season, back into the starting lineup and moved Raphiael Putney to the bench.

Lalanne playing center allowed Sampson Carter to move back to his more natural forward spot. It was Putney’s first time not starting this season. Lalanne took the opening tip in his absence.

The move seemed to help both Lalanne and Putney.

Lalanne finished with 12 points and six rebounds, while Putney had a season-high 12 rebounds to go with nine points and a blocked shot in UMass’ 99-94 loss to St. Bonaventure, Wednesday.

“I wanted to go with a little more size and give Putney a little more juice coming off the bench,” Kellogg said. “I thought both of them played a little better.”

ALMOST SHORTHANDED — Carter, Terrell Vinson, Maxie Esho and Putney all fouled out for the Minutemen leaving them with just five players. Of those five Lalanne had four fouls. If he had picked up his fifth foul UMass would have had to finish the game with four players.

MILESTONES —Chaz Williams’ 12 assists marked the fifth time this season he’s had 10 or more. He now has 419 in less than two years at UMass, moving him into seventh place on the school’s career list. His 188 assists this season are the eighth best in a single season at UMass.

His 26 points gave him 1,030 in his UMass career moving him into 41st all-time, 15 spots behind Vinson (No. 26, 1,174).

NEXT UP — The Minutemen will try to end their three-game skid, Saturday at 1 p.m. against Dayton at the Mullins Center. The Flyers (14-11, 4-7 Atlantic 10) have dropped four of their last six, but beat Xavier 70-59 Saturday.

BIG NIGHT — Eric Mosley’s 39 points marked the first time someone scored 30 against UMass this season. It’s the most by a Minuteman foe since Temple’s David Hawkins had 41 in 2004. It was the most by a St. Bonaventure player since 1977 and matched the most scored by an Atlantic 10 player this year.
