Valentine’s Day events planned in Amherst
AMHERST — The Business Improvement District wants people to spend their Valentine’s Day night in downtown Amherst.
Executive Director Alex Krogh-Grabbe said the BID is working with 19 sit-down restaurants in town, include Baku’s, Chez Albert and The Pub, to give away gift certificate bundles aimed at bringing people to town for the evening.
Each bundle will contain a restaurant gift certificate along with tickets for a movie at the Amherst Cinema.
Krogh-Grabbe said the BID is working with radio station WRSI to have some of these bundles given away during the morning show hosted by Monte Belmonte.
The rest of the bundles will be distributed randomly to people who follow and indicate that they “like” the BID’s Facebook page.
Krogh-Grabbe said the holiday offers an opportunity to draw attention to the dining scene and other activities.
“The idea is that not only people receiving them can have a night out for Valentine’s Day, but others can also have a good time,” Krogh-Grabbe said.
The BID is also trying to make the streets more festive by giving out chocolate hearts to people coming downtown on Feb. 9 between 1 and 3 p.m. and again on Valentine’s Day from noon to 2 p.m.
Student volunteers from the University of Massachusetts are expected to assist in handing out these treats.
Various restaurants will have special events that night. The High Horse pub will have a photobooth.
“This is just to keep up the momentum. We have a lot going on downtown, even in February,” Krogh-Grabbe said.
Meanwhile, the Friends of the Jones Library are collecting items for its annual basket fundraiser, though this year’s is not timed specifically to Valentine’s Day.
Volunteers will be making six super-sized themed baskets that will be on display at the library for a full month, Feb. 21 to March 24. During that time, raffle tickets will be sold for each basket.
The drawing will be held at a wine-tasting event hosted by the Friends on March 24 from 3 to 5 p.m.
The six themes are “knitting,” “cooking,” “gardening,” “night on the town,” “ages 9 and up” and “younger children, ages 5 to 8.”
Donations should be made by Saturday. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the summer reading clubs at the Jones, Munson Memorial and North Amherst libraries.

Another Valentine’s Day-themed event is the Love Notes concert, sponsored by the Amherst Club, which will take place Sunday at 2:30 p.m. at Buckley Recital Hall at Amherst College.
