School Zone: Students sell T-shirts for Cancer Care

The ARHS Future Business Leaders of America are organizing a fundraiser for the Cooley Dickinson Cancer Care fund. They are raising donations and selling T-shirts for $10 each. T-shirt wearers will get free admission to the Amherst Regional High School girls basketball game on Feb. 7, and the boys basketball game on Feb. 8. The Future Business Leaders of America will be hosting performances during halftime of both games. To make a donation or purchase a T-shirt, contact kirwanj@arps.org.

CROSS CULTURE: On a recent visit to an elementary and middle school in Taipei, Taiwan, the director of the Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School in Hadley, Richard Alcorn, presented the school with a copy of Hadleyopoly. The board game is a version of Monopoly set in Hadley that emphasizes the community’s farming culture. It is sold to raise money for the Hadley Farm Museum. Alcorn said he hopes the gift will help the students learn English and enhance cross-cultural understanding.

PRINCIPAL SEARCH: The Crocker Farm School has formed a principal screening committee to evaluate applicants. The 11-member committee includes parents, school staff and teachers, and central office staff members. Applications for the principal position are due by Feb. 8. The screening committee will invite six to eight candidates to interview, and select one to three finalists who will be invited to a public forum in early March.

5K FOR TECHNOLOGY: A group calling itself Helping Hearts for Hadley Schools is raising money for technology upgrades in Hadley’s schools with a 5K run and block party. The event is scheduled for April 7, but registration is open and fundraising is well under way. More information can be found at www.helpingheartsforhadleyschools.org.

AND: The Regional School District Planning Board will hold a meeting to hear from consultants on the benefits of regionalizing the Amherst, Pelham, Shutesbury and Leverett elementary schools, Saturday from 1 to 3. p.m. in the Amherst Regional Middle School auditorium ... The ARHS School Council will be holding a lecture on the Pressures of a Competitive Society, Feb. 7 at 7 p.m. in the ARHS Library.
