UMass wins penalty-filled Ledyard championship
A power-play goal 15 seconds into the third period proved to be the game winner as the University of Massachusetts hockey team beat No. 8 Dartmouth 3-2 in the championship of the Ledyard Classic Monday.
Branden Gracel’s goal capped a penalty-filled game in Hanover, N.H.
The teams, which were ranked in the bottom five in the nation in penalties, combined for 23 infractions as players spent 87 minutes in the penalty box.
There were two game misconducts — one per team — three five-minute majors and four 10-minute misconducts.
UMass went 2 for 11 on the power play, while Dartmouth was 0 for 4.
Conor Sheary (assist) and Eddie Olczyk also scored for the Minutemen (7-9-2).
Conor Allen, Gracel and Shane Walsh each had one assist.
Kevin Boyle made 26 saves for the win.
