‘Be Local, Build Local’ at A.P.E. Gallery

“Be Local, Build Local,” the exhibition of 17 architectural designs and photos by architects in western Massachusetts, continues through Saturday at A.P.E. Gallery, 126 Main St., Northampton. There is a reception Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. Lorin Starr, executive director of WMAIA, organized the exhibition.

Visitors to the gallery may vote for their favorite design in the People’s Choice Award, which will be presented at the reception. Visitors can also participate in a drawing for a gift certificate from RK Miles, a Hatfield building supply store.

The designs on view include a “Queen Truss” house in Leverett, designed by Tullio Inglese of TIA in Amherst; a “net zero” Hadley house with a solar array providing electricity to charge an electric car as well as for daily living, designed by Bruce Coldham of Coldham and Hartman Architects of Amherst; and a “tiny house,” designed and built by University of Massachusetts Amherst students with professor Carey Clouse through the Yestermorrow Design Build program in Vermont.

The display also includes plaques with quotations on design from famous architects, city planners and others.

“Architects design for the heart as well as for the head” is one quote, from contemporary architect Randy Deutsch. Another, from Ezra Pound, reads: “A real building is one on which the eye can light and stay lit.”

The gallery is open Friday from noon to 8 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
