Northampton woman arrested after allegedly mugging Amherst College student
AMHERST — A woman who allegedly tried to steal a purse from an Amherst College student Saturday afternoon was arrested less than two hours later.
Tracey Jane Loy-Richter, 59, who provided an address as 46 Center St., Northampton, was arrested at 6:59 p.m. on Boltwood Avenue on charges of larceny from a person, attempting to commit a crime and assault and battery, said Detective David Foster.
Loy-Richter allegedly approached the student walking near Porter dormitory on Boltwood Avenue, which faces the Town Common, tried to steal her purse and struggled when the student resisted. The suspect then fled toward the town center.
The arrest was made after police were given a description of the alleged assailant.
Prior to the arrest, Amherst College police issued a campuswide crime alert that included the description of the perpetrator and advice to report suspicious people and circumstances to either town or campus police.
The victim was not injured during the incident, police said.
