School Zone: One-day enrichment classes offered to ARHS students

One-day courses in comic strips and how to make successful TV shows will be available to students at the Regional Middle School and Amherst Regional High School on Saturday, Dec. 1.

These courses will be at Amherst College from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be taught by Amherst College students. There is a $10 fee that includes lunch.

Other courses deal with film appreciation, ethics, photography, and “philosophy for dummies.”

ENROLLMENT DOWN: There are 1,555 students in the secondary schools this year, down from 1,592 last year. Since 2003-04, the student population has declined by an average of 50 students a year.

There are 93 students enrolled this year who live outside the four towns in the region. Of these “school choice” students, 35 live in Hadley, and 15 live in Belchertown. The next largest sending town is Sunderland with six choice students. Students come to the middle and high schools from as far away as Ashfield, Orange, Worthington and Springfield.

SOCIAL JUSTICE: Ten ARHS students attended the Minority Student Achievement Association conference in Phoenix, Ariz,. Oct. 3-6 along with staff members Mary Custard and Shari Abbott.

The main speaker was Calvin Terrell, who spoke about social justice and diversity. Next year’s annual conference will be hosted by ARHS, and there are efforts to bring Terrell here for a week of workshops.

HURRICANE HELP: The bake sale on Election Day at Fort River School raised $750 for the American Red Cross’s efforts on behalf of victims of Hurricane Sandy. Stephanie Jones organized the sale for the Parent Guardian Organization.

NEW GROUP: The Regional Middle School now has a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender and Friends group that meets Mondays after school.

AND: The Amherst School Committee will meet Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the ARHS library. The agenda includes budget guidelines for next year and an update on the Spanish language program...The Regional School Committee’s Policy Subcommittee will discuss class-size policy Monday at 5 p.m. in the superintendent’s conference room at the middle school... The ARHS exam period is next Monday through Wednesday, and Wednesday will be a half day. There is no school next Thursday or Friday...
