Amherst girls volleyball swept out of Division 2 quarterfinals by Agawam

The Amherst Regional girls volleyball team had a chance to tie the match if it pulled out a win in the second set.

The Hurricanes got it close, but couldn’t close the door on the road. Agawam took the momentum and swept its way to a 3-0 victory in the Western Massachusetts Division 2 Tournament quarterfinal round.

The Brownies advanced to the semifinal round with a 25-11, 25-20, 25-17 win.

“We were really going neck and neck with them then they pulled away” in the second, Amherst coach Kacey Schmitt said. “We had a little bit of that trouble this year pulling out the close sets.”

Agawam ended Amherst’s regular season with a victory on the Hurricanes’ senior night. Monday’s victory was the third this season over Amherst.

Athena Donta had eight kills, 10 digs and two aces, while Haley Parker had four kills, three blocks and two aces for Amherst.

Libero Cassie Long had 12 digs in the loss.

It was the final game for six seniors: Greta Devoney, Lissa McLaughlin, Shannon Napier, Joelle Deroy, Donta and Parker.

“I was hoping we would come out tough but I felt we were back on the heels in the beginning,” Schmitt said. “I’m sorry to lose these six seniors. They were good kids, good role models and committed to the team.”

Lee 3, Belchertown 0 — The 11th-seeded Orioles never got going and fell 25-16, 25-17, 25-9 to the third-seeded Wildcats in the Western Massachusetts Division 3 Tournament first round.

Lee (20-0) will play at No. 2 Mahar (15-5) Wednesday night. The Orioles finished 10-10.

Belchertown fell behind 19-10 in the first set and rallied to 22-16. The Wildcats though closed out the set and rolled from there.

“We had three missed first serves, got called for five double hits, and blocked it out of bounds three times,” Belchertown coach Scott Poulin said. “We gave them the first game.”
