UMass field hockey advances to Atlantic 10 championship

The University of Massachusetts field hockey advanced to the Atlantic 10 tournament championship game with a 5-3 victory over Temple Friday at Garber Field.

The 19th-ranked and No. 2-seeded Minutewomen (13-8) will play No. 1 seed Richmond (16-4) Saturday at 2 p.m. at Garber. The 16th-ranked Spiders advanced with a 5-0 win over Virginia Commonwealth.

Thando Zono (assist) recorded a pair of goals, while Nicole Cordero, Kim Young and Renee Suter added one tally each for UMass.

Temple (12-9) took an early 1-0 lead but UMass answered quickly and led 3-1 at halftime.

Kate Heineman had two assists, while Alexa Sikalis, Callie Sweigart and Alyssa Ineson each had one.

Sam Carlino made six saves in the win.

Women’s volleyball

Williams 3, Amherst College 0 — The Lord Jeffs fell 25-19, 25-15, 25-22 as their season came to an end in the quarterfinal round of the NESCAC tournament in New London, Conn.

Emily Waterhouse had 10 kills, while Lizzie Ahern added nine. Nicole Carter had 25 assists and 11 digs for Amherst (14-9).

Men’s soccer

Dayton 2, UMass 0 — Brian Frame made two saves but the Minutemen (5-10-3, 2-6 Atlantic 10) fell on the road.
