AMHERST — An Amherst man who drove his car off South East Street into a tree Monday night, and nearly hit a nearby house, is scheduled to be arraigned on multiple charges in Eastern Hampshire District Court in Belchertown on Friday.
Ailton N. Correia, 22, of 188 East Hadley Road, Unit 151-E, was arrested on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol causing serious bodily injury, negligent operation of a motor vehicle to endanger, failure to stay within marked lanes and speeding, police said.
Correia allegedly drove his car off the road and through a yard at 706 South East St. about 10 p.m. The car struck a large tree and came to rest on the front doorstep of the brick house owned by Janet McGowan.
Both Correia and a female passenger, who was not identified by authorities, were taken by Amherst Fire Department ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield for treatment of non-life threatening injuries, police said. A hospital spokesman said Tuesday that he had no information about Correia or whether he was being treated at Baystate.
