Weekend Planner — Theater: ‘King Lear’ at Amhert Cinema

English critics have split over National Theater’s production of “King Lear.” The Independent calls the London production “a powerfully searching account of the tragedy that fuses the familial and the cosmic, the epic and the intimate,” while The Telegraph cites director Sam Mendes’ “uncharacteristic errors of judgment,” including a “storm scene that has a touch of the rock video about it.” Some think Simon Russell Beale’s portrayal of Lear is “the best [we] have ever seen” (The London Evening Standard) and “proves once again why he is one of our great actors” (The Times). Others say “There’s a stature problem” and that the actor can’t convincingly convey physical threat (The Daily Mail). Then there’s the Fool, whose depicted demise is either “truly shocking” (The Guardian) or a “flashy director’s theatre at its worst” (The Telegraph).
