Newport, RI, man arrested for stealing copper downspouts
NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) — A Newport man has been arrested for allegedly stealing copper downspouts from 16 homes around the city.
Newport police say 25-year-old Anthony Hendricksen is scheduled to be arraigned at Newport District Court on Wednesday on 16 counts of larceny and one count of vandalism. Police say in recent weeks, Hendricksen has sold 600 pounds of folded and compressed copper downspouts at a salvage company in Westport, Mass.
They began investigating in mid-April after downspouts were stolen from several homes. Police say early Monday morning, they stopped Hendricksen walking with a screwdriver. They let him go but found a folded and compressed downspout in the area.
Later that morning, they watched him pick up the downspout and put it in his car.
He was arrested, and police say he confessed.
