Four running unopposed for Northampton School Committee

Northampton — Four people are running for seats on the Northampton School Committee without opposition.

Incumbent School Committee members Howard Moore, 55, of Cross Path Road, and Downey Meyer, 47, of North Farms Road, are running in wards 3 and 7, respectively. Meyer is running as a write-in candidate because he did not file paperwork in time to appear on the ballot.

Also running unopposed are Pam Hannah, 42, of Church Street in Ward 1, and Ann Hennessey, 48, of Federal Street in Ward 5 — both newcomers to the school board.

Hannah works as branch manager of the University of Massachusetts Amherst branch of the Five College Federal Credit Union. She lives with her wife, Rachel Hannah and their 3-year-old son.

Hennessey teaches social studies at Chicopee High School and is also certified as a special education teacher. She is married to Jo Comerford, executive director of the National Priorities Project, and has two children in the Northampton public schools.

Incumbents Alden Bourne of Ward 1 and Stephanie Pick of Ward 5 are not seeking re-election this fall.

School Committee seats in even-numbered wards, where candidates are in the middle of four-year terms, are not up for re-election this fall. The city is moving to comply with new charter rules that require all school board terms to run concurrently and last for two years. That will occur by the 2015 election, according to the city clerk’s office.
