Northampton High School teacher seeks graphic novels

Northampton High School English teacher Suzanne Strauss is seeking help in acquiring graphic novels for a new elective class.

Strauss, a 15-year veteran at the high school, hopes to raise money to purchase about 30 copies each of Scott McCloud’s “Understanding Comics,” Art Spiegelman’s “Maus,” Marjane Satrapie’s “Persepolis,” Jeff Smith’s “Bone” and Gene Yuen Lang’s “American Born Chinese.”

The one-credit graphic novels course, open to sophomores, juniors and seniors, will explore the genre as both literature and art, according to the high school course catalogue. Students will read and research graphic novels and will create one of their own.

Those interested in donating either books or money should contact Strauss at sstrauss@northampton-k12.us.
