Easthampton High School seniors offered online class at U-Wisconsin
Seniors at Easthampton High School are being offered a chance to take a free online college readiness course at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse.
When Shirley Gilfether, curriculum director for the Easthampton schools, heard about the class, which is funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, she thought it would be helpful for EHS seniors preparing for college placement tests in April or those who want to brush up on their math skills.
The class will also help students avoid having to take remedial courses in college, Gilfether said. “We are not alone in having an issue of students who need to take those courses,” she said. Nationally, 35 percent of students enrolled in four-year colleges end up taking remedial math courses, Gilfether noted, and the proportion at community colleges is near 50 percent.
The seven-week course being offered by the University of Wisconsin La Crosse includes quizzes, podcasts and online posts, “so it’s not just a dry lecture,” Gilfether said. The class began Jan. 28 but is still accepting enrollments. EHS Seniors who sign up by the end of the week will be able to take it for free before the April college placement tests.
Students who complete the course will receive certificates of highest honors, honors, achievement or participation, Gilfether said. They will also earn one credit from Easthampton High School.
Details about the course are available on the university’s website, www.uwlax.edu, or by calling Gilfether at 529-1500, ext. 140.
