Northampton school superintendent Brian Salzer gets 2 percent salary increase

NORTHAMPTON — Schools Superintendent Brian Salzer will receive a 2 percent salary increase retroactive to July 1, bringing his total annual pay to $131,070.
The School Committee approved the increase in executive session Thursday, following a positive evaluation of Salzer’s first year on the job.
“Our evaluation of Brian was superb and we wanted to do something to reflect that,” said School Committee Vice Chair Stephanie Pick. “He was also clear that he didn’t want to receive more than anyone else is receiving.”
The district’s contract with six bargaining units is under the umbrella of the Northampton Association of School Employees and expires at the end of June 2013. It calls for a 1 percent increase in the first year of the pact and 1 percent in the final year.
School committee members also agreed to increase the amount included in Salzer’s contract for professional training from $3,000 to $3,650.
Salzer’s salary remains below the statewide average for school superintendents — $152,568 — cited by the Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents.
Pick pointed out that his pay is also lower than that of some other local schools chiefs. “There’s no way we can catch up, but it’s incumbent on us not to let that get further behind,” she said.
Salzer is the first city school employee to be reviewed under a new evaluation system the state is requiring of all “Race to the Top” districts.
Overall, the School Committee rated Salzer proficient, which is the target for the new evaluation tool. In some areas, including fiscal management, community outreach and “professional culture,” committee members rated him exemplary.
