AMHERST — A college-age man dressed in a Superman costume suffered head injuries after being punched in the face and falling to the ground at a downtown location late Wednesday night.

Police Detective Richard MacLean said officers responded to the area of North Pleasant and Fearing streets around 10:50 p.m. for a report of an injured man who had been knocked down on the sidewalk and then dragged into a nearby yard.

The man was taken by Amherst Fire Department ambulance to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton for treatment of non life-threatening injuries, MacLean said.

Police determined that the man, who was not identified, was accosting passers-by and attempting to start fights. The man blocked the driveway to a home and when he refused to move for a vehicle, he was punched in the face and fell head-first to the ground, MacLean said. The man was on the lawn when police arrived.

Police continue to investigate the incident.
