Area police news
∎ A man who took American flags from in front of the American Legion on Amity Street and stuffed them into the sleeve of his sweatshirt was located by police at 1:37 a.m. Sunday. The man, who explained his actions by saying he is from France, was sent on his way, and the flags were confiscated by police.
∎ Matthew Robert Piela, 24, of Riverboat Village, Unit 166, South Hadley, was arrested at 1:05 a.m. Sunday on South Pleasant Street on charges of operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, negligent operation of a motor vehicle to endanger and failure to stay within marked lanes, police said.
∎ Several people on Sunderland Road at 2:09 a.m. Saturday were trying to free a goat that had its head stuck in the fence. An officer assisted in safely rescuing the goat by cutting wire away from the fence.
∎ Police took a report about 5 p.m. Friday from a security guard at Wal-Mart, 180 North King St., that a man left the store with $36.96 worth of Red Bull. The theft is under investigation.
∎ Police arrested Luis Alberto Pantojas, 404 Rocky Hill Road, Florence, about 3:30 p.m. Friday on a charge of intimidation of a witness after they responded to his home for a reported domestic disturbance to find he had allegedly ripped a phone from the wall.
∎ Police say they will summon a woman to court to face a shoplifting charge after officers responded to Wal-Mart, 180 North King St., at 11:15 a.m. Friday for a report that she had taken curtains, a gift bag, and an eraser valued at $46.12.
