Lightning hits roof, damaging attic of home on Harkness Road in Pelham
PELHAM — Friday evening’s lightning and rain are blamed for a fire that damaged a Pelham house and flooding that closed Quarry Road.
According to Pelham Deputy Fire Chief Richard Hall, a fire was reported at 57 Harkness Road about 6:25 p.m.
Hall said the roof was apparently struck by lightning, causing a small fire in the attic.
Hall said the homeowner was not home when the fire began, but she discovered it when she arrived home and alerted firefighters.
Hall said eight firefighters from Pelham and four from Amherst responded and took about 20 minutes to extinguish the fire which was confined to the attic. Other parts of the house suffered smoke and water damage, Hall said.
Meanwhile, heavy rains washed out a section of Quarry Road, forcing authorities to close it early Friday evening, Hall said.
